The Innovation Lab class in Northwestern’s Master of Science in Law (MSL) program allows students to devise a real-world solution to a problem that exists in law practice. The “clients” in this class are lawyers from various settings who have identified a problem in delivering legal services; MSL students work together with JD, LLM, and computer science students to develop a technology solution that will address the problem. Three of the presentations at our 2022 Symposium were done by students from the Innovation Lab class who had developed products to solve their client’s problem. Read about the presentations in this post.

Kai Seltner and his Innovation Lab group collaborated with Mayer Brown’s Legal Innovation team to develop a tool that helps lawyers identify and adjust clauses in contracts, thus improving the document drafting process.
Emily Marun and Taha Muhammad-Ali collaborated with the Institute for Augmented Intelligence in Medicine to develop a tool that automates Data Use Agreements, allowing for better use of data among researchers.
Vivien Lai and Rory Fitzpatrick developed a tool to make it easier for lawyers and the public to understand and navigate complex (and often very long!) omnibus legislation.
