Evan Goldberg, MSL Director of External Outreach, and Christi Beavers, MSL Director of Program Development, recently gave a spirited presentation to MSL students on the basics of interviewing, sharing a variety of tips and advice to prepare for the process. Even the most seasoned interviewees are well-served by keeping the following tips in mind:
- Don’t neglect the work before the interview. Research the role and the company, and be able to clearly articulate why your background and experience make you a great fit for the particular role.
- Prepare your pitch. Be able to connect your past experiences to what you can do for the employer in the future. Make it clear how your past successes will relate to what the employer (or school) is looking for. Try to do all of this in a concise way.
- Practice, practice, practice. Interviewing is a skill, and skills can be improved. Mock interviews, sample questions, networking events – there are lots of ways to practice interview skills, and practice makes progress!
- Don’t get sidetracked by format. Even if your interview is conducted virtually and/or by video, treat it as if it were being conducted in-person. Be open to engaging in small talk, dress professionally, be mindful of body language, confirm logistics, and listen attentively.
- Be prepared to ask questions. Interviewing is not just about the employer getting to know you – it is also about the interviewee getting to know the employer. Preparing questions helps you think critically about a job opportunity; asking questions conveys interest in and enthusiasm for the role.
