MSL Alumni Panel Discussion: Getting your first job post-MSL

With graduation on the horizon for the MSL class of 2021, students are thinking about what they will do post-MSL. Connecting with MSL alumni is an important way for current students to learn about the wide variety of opportunities available to them. MSL Director of External Outreach, Evan Goldberg, recently hosted a panel event featuring recent graduates from a variety of industries who came to the MSL without extensive prior work experience. Our outstanding panelists included:

The panelists discussed their experience in various job roles and industries, including regulatory affairs, compliance, finance, pharmaceuticals, and health care.  As panelists walked through their different paths, from undergraduate, to the MSL, to their early career journeys, students learned how the MSL degree can compliment their undergraduate coursework and steer them to new and interesting professional areas.

In sharing what aspects of the MSL helped them the most, panelists named specific courses across the curriculum, the power of their MSL network, and the value of resume, cover letter, and interview coaching offered by MSL staff.

Panelists discussed what a ‘day on the job’ looks like in the different industries represented, and the different ways alumni are applying the skills acquired in the MSL program.  For example, alumni Josh Lay (MSL ’19) shared that “the MSL doesn’t just teach you things; it also teaches you how to learn.”  Radhika Raturi (MSL ’20) shared that the most valuable skills she acquired in the MSL program were multitasking and problem-solving, both of which she said she uses daily. Thomas Abraham (MSL ’20) cited presentation skills as an invaluable take-away from the MSL program.

This panel event was an insightful, energy-boosting kick-off to our spring semester; it helped to focus students on job-related issues, and provided another opportunity for them to connect with MSL alumni.  We are very grateful to our generous alumni, who consistently devote their time and expertise to support and guide our current students.
