Hello! My name is Nina Sedeno and I am from Chicago, Illinois. I am a rising junior in Weinberg, currently majoring in International Studies and Political Science. I am thrilled to be spending my summer at Peking University!
I chose to study abroad in China for two reasons: (1) to strengthen my language skills and (2) to develop a better understanding of the Chinese people and culture. Over the last six years, I have studied Mandarin, but I know that nothing can compare to living there day to day among the Chinese community.
Academically, I believe that studying abroad will help me develop a deeper cultural understanding as I pursue my professional goals of working in international relations and government.
As a third generation Latina immigrant, I understand what it means to be bi-cultural and bilingual. I understand the advantages and, at times, the challenges living in and between cultures. I have also developed an appreciation for how much we can learn from one another and how engaging multiple perspectives can be enriching and mutually beneficial. Personally, I know that studying abroad can broaden my worldview.
I had the opportunity to travel to China my freshman year of high school! I was only there for two weeks; at the time, I promised myself that I would return one day and the opportunity has finally come. I am so excited to experience the country again with fresh eyes, and of course, make new friends!
