Potsdam Excursion: Pictures of Palaces and Portraits of Ourselves

Britt Jordan, NU in Berlin, Summer 2014

Two weekends ago, IPD Berlin had the vainglorious pleasure to visit Potsdam, the small, but gorgeous, capital of the Brandenburg state. As our tour guide[1]sassily explained about Berlin and Potsdam, “Berlin is the younger sister of the two, and Potsdam is the attractive one.” We figured we would capitalize on this phenomenon with a picture or two.

In Front of Sanssouci

Candids were abound in front of the extraordinary Sanssouci

One of the castles we visited during our visit was Schloss Sanssouci, the summer palace of someone important. The group was abuzz with the photography prospects that the castle had to offer. The Greco-Roman columns in the back of the palace offered a good background for pensive, individual portraits, while the vineyard-covered terraces served as the perfect backdrop for wacky group photos.[2]

We also took pictures at other places, such as the Neues Palais. This behemoth of a palace made Schloss Sanssouci look like a very sophisticated shack. The problem with taking pictures in front of good ol’ NP was that you couldn’t get the entire structure in the frame of the shot unless you were absurdly far away. This sent a giant storm cloud over our Foto machen adventures, but alas we finished the day with a good number of food snaps at a restaurant in the heart of Potsdam. All in all, we had a delightful little time in Potsdam, and, boy, do we have the pictures to prove it.

[1] A little bit on our tour guide. He spoke really good secondary-language English, which allowed his sarcastic comments about historical characters to be both salty and slightly ridiculous.

[2] Special shout out to Sharon Fan, the woman behind the lens who made us look presentable to the outside world with her fancy camera techniques, and of course to the incomparable Frau Zeller, who proved that a good photographer can make even the strangest group seem normal.
