Hi everyone,
Thank you for your patience and cooperation as the Farha and Hupp groups work to readjust our physical spaces over the next couple of weeks as discussed in the joint Zoom meeting on Monday. During this process, our goal is to maintain the long-lasting and fruitful collaboration between the groups. Below is our plan moving forward for lab spaces, office spaces, ordering, instruments, and safety concerns including maximum capacity. Some policies not mentioned here (namely logistics of moving a select few hoods) will be addressed to specific people in a separate email.
Lab Spaces:
- Ryan 1018 North side (ranging from North side wall up to Kent’s current hood) will serve as the Hupp side. Ryan 1018 South side (ranging from Jingyi’s current hood to the South side wall) will serve as the Farha side.
- Existing chemicals will still be freely shared between the groups and will not be re-organized at this time (i.e. reagents in cabinets in 1018).
- Hupp communal supplies will be stored in North side 1018 entrance and Farha communal supplies will be stored in South side 1018 entrance (as well as Ryan 2035 vestibule). Existing communal supplies will be split between groups.
- An extra flammable cabinet in Ryan 2035 will be moved and placed in Tech KG30.
Office Spaces:
- Farha office spaces are: Ryan 1024, 1026, 2033, 2017, 2021, and 2032. Ryan 4026 is temporary overflow space.
- Hupp office Spaces are: Tech KG34, Ryan 1022, 1021, 1020, 1019, and 1016. Ryan 1004 is a temporary overflow space.
Ordering:
- No more joint orders for consumables will be completed. Consumable materials include solvent, vials, gloves, face masks, microwave vials, etc. Joint students can order chemicals needed for their projects on a specific grant if needed.
- For any deliveries to Ryan 1018, assign Hupp Group deliveries to 1018-NorthEnd in iBuy and Farha Group deliveries to 1018-SouthEnd in iBuy.
- A separate ordering spreadsheet will be used for Farha Lab and another for Hupp Lab. Joint students can use either.
- One gas tank ordering spreadsheet will still be used. Nick will troubleshoot different ways to effectively make the two groups ordering on this distinct yet easy for him to sort through / process.
Instruments:
- All shared instruments in Ryan 1018 (microwave, DRIFTS, GC, glovebox) will be labeled as shared. Outside of KG21, a sign will be placed indicating all equipment inside the space is shared by both Farha and Hupp labs.
- Any shared instrument will have 1 Farha and 1 Hupp manager (either primary or secondary). Each will be responsible for training members from their respective group and communicating relevant instrument status updates to their respective groups.
- The current balance in Ryan 1018 will be moved to the Hupp side. Farha group will purchase a balance for south side.
- The fridge in Ryan 1018 will be moved to the Hupp side. Farha Group will utilize their current fridge in Ryan 2035.
- A single-glovebox for radioactive chemistry will be placed in the Farha side of 1018.
- An existing glovebox in KG30 will be decertified from its prior use for RAM chemistry. Then, it will remain in KG30 as a joint glovebox.
Safety Concerns:
- We anticipate that the groups will maintain very similar safety policies. However, if the Hupp Lab develops a policy that is not present in the Farha Lab, all Farha Lab members should obey this policy when in the Hupp Lab (and vice versa).
- A shift in the maximum capacity for will occur effective Monday, June 22within Ryan 1018 and Tech KG30 given the shift in hood occupation within these spaces. Ryan 1018 will now accommodate 6 Hupp researchers and 5 Farha researchers at a time. Tech KG30 will now accommodate only 4 Hupp researchers. If a Farha Group member must use an instrument in KG30, they must communicate with Hupp Group researchers to determine when there will be less than 4 people present. Again, these maximum capacities are only in place until the University lifts them.
- In the future, if any incoming Farha members need access to a Hupp Space (Ryan 1018 north side and Tech KG30) to use a shared instrument, they must complete a safety walk-through of these spaces with Ying. Vice versa if any incoming Hupp members need access to a shared instrument in the Farha Space they must complete a safety walk-through of the space with Megan. Again, this is for new members only. No current group members will require additional walk-throughs, we are just informing everyone in case you mentor an incoming student so you are aware of this policy.
Best,
-Megan, Ying, Omar, and Joe
