Media as a Weapon & a Shield: The Role of Reputation in Resilience
Media isn’t just about reporting facts, it shapes reputations and decides who gets to be heard. In this presentation, I’ll explore how media can be both a weapon and a shield, influencing everything from social movements to international conflicts. Through examples like #MeToo, Black Lives Matter, the 2017 Gulf Crisis, and the Israel-Palestine conflict, I’ll show how people and nations use media to build credibility, push back against attacks, and stay resilient. I’ll also share my own experiences, from seeing how the Gulf Crisis impacted my family to navigating digital activism. This minor changed how I see the news and my own role in shaping narratives. My goal is to highlight that media isn’t neutral, it’s a tool that can either strengthen or break resilience, depending on who controls the story.
