Media as a Strategic Tool for Political Narratives
Imagine waking up to a trending hashtag that shapes global opinions overnight.
Who created it? Who amplified it? And most importantly, who benefits from it? In today’s interconnected world, media is far more than just a source of information, it is a strategic tool wielded by governments, corporations, and political actors to shape narratives, influence public opinion, and control political realities. Throughout my Media and Politics minor, I have explored the intersection of media, power, and policy, examining how digital authoritarianism, legal frameworks, national identity, and diversity narratives shape our perceptions. From state sponsored disinformation campaigns to the media’s role in gender representation, my coursework has given me a critical lens to analyze the political influence of the media. This presentation will take you through my learning journey, using case studies such as the Gulf Crisis to demonstrate the media’s role as both a weapon and a diplomatic tool and aims to deepen our understanding of media’s role in governance, policy-making, and social change, challenging us to think critically about the narratives we consume.
