Pierre James

Cohort: 2

Where are you from?

Morgan Park/Beverly Chicago (South Side).

What is your favorite field of study/topic?

Law, writing, and business.

What is something you would like people to know about you as a student?

I don’t want to let down my family or NPEP so my fear of failure is what motivates me. Being a part of this program is one of the most important things I have done in my life. I am overwhelmed by the culture of support and commitment by the people I’ve come in contact with at NPEP they are truly invested in helping me be a better human being.

What does being a part of NPEP mean to you?

It means everything to me, it gives me a sense of pride knowing my legacy is connected to greatness. It means if I can become a student at Northwestern, I can do anything. It means hope.

What course has had the biggest impact on you and why?

PHIL 111, RTVF 360, and Asian Studies. These courses allowed me to write and express myself through the art of storytelling. This is not a task but one of my pleasures in life, an escape from this reality or a vehicle to vent.

What is your favorite book or article that you have read in your NPEP classes?

“Journey to the West.” It was an adventure that allowed me to explore another culture. It’s like being in an alien world forcing you to think outside of the box.

What assignment (paper, project, homework) have you found the most rewarding?

The chemistry and math assignments. Looking at the finished product, I amazed myself. I found it hard to believe I was responsible for the complex solutions and compounds, and so did those who walked past my cell and noticed what I had done.
