Reentry & Restorative Justice

Reentry

Reentry

The Reentry Team works with students both currently incarcerated and those who have been released and aims to support essential services as students integrate into their home and academic communities. The team helps connect students to resources that can help with fundraising for post-incarceration transition costs, applying for jobs (resumes, networking, etc.), setting them up with technological support and health services, and more.

Though the primary focus of the team is connecting students with other reentry resources and services in their neighborhoods, the Reentry Team also provides academic support via tutoring and one-on-one check-ins for students who are reentering their communities.

Maintaining our students’ well-being and mental health is a top priority for the Reentry Team.

Restorative Justice

The Restorative Justice Team — originally established through a Northwestern University Racial Equity and Community Partnership Grant awarded to the James B. Moran Center for Youth Advocacy in June 2021 — is comprised of a diverse group of individuals united by the common aim of restoring justice. In partnership with the Center on Negotiation, Mediation, and Restorative Justice and NPEP, the Restorative Justice Team helped build capacity within Evanston for repairing harm in a holistic and restorative way.

Though the grant has concluded, the Restorative Justice Team continues to focus on community building, establishing shared values, and cultivating meaningful relationships through engaged dialogue and continuous learning. The team’s work is evolving and, as a result, they are creating new initiatives.

The Restorative Justice Team is part of a much-needed movement inside and outside of prison sparking conversation to create change based on love, peace, and understanding. The team allows people to be seen and heard, which is especially important after dehumanization from the criminal legal system. Through the team, people can be who they were meant to be. Restorative justice can uplift those who have caused and experienced harmed. In order to heal, people need to feel. Restorative justice is for the people.
