Donnell Green

Cohort: 3

Where are you from?

Chicago.

Why did you decide to apply to NPEP?

I knew I had to apply because I had seeds inside of me that were in need of watering, so when the NPEP opportunity opened, I thought, this must be! This will facilitate my evolution. I’m excited to put the work in and build a community. I’m excited to learn and leave something I can be proud of.

What does being a part of NPEP mean to you?

It means I have potential beyond my measures. It means someone sees something in me. It means everything to me. It confirms I belong.

What has been your favorite NPEP reading?

Wow. There have been a few. But if I must, I would say “Punishment and Transformation” because it implores us to take a practical and rational approach to sentencing in the criminal legal system. It confirms something I experienced but didn’t know how to phrase. I agree that an offender’s mental state should be considered throughout the entirety of incarceration. As of now, we’re not revisiting an offender’s mental state even if it’s 20 years since the offense was committed. When, after all, mental states play a huge role in charging and sentencing.

What is something you would like others to know about you as a student?

I’m on my way!

What is a fact about yourself others might find surprising?

I played the saxophone in fifth grade. Shh, don’t tell no one. Lol.
