Catherine on Week Three at her Fall 2013 internship

Name: Catherine
Senior
Major: Economics
CFS Program: Business Field Studies

I am interning for a hedge fund called Coe Capital Management. My internship process was very exciting because I was able to interview with all different types of firms from private equity to consulting to hedge funds. At the end day, it was very difficult to turn down such exceptional companies. I decided to choose Coe Capital because I believed it would provide me with the most hands-on experience and knowledge for the financial world. To this very day, I have learned more than I would ever have thought to have learned within a three week span. It is an unbelievable experience! My team is very supportive and great to work with. Since it is earnings season, hedge funds, in particular, are very busy. I am very fortunate to be a part of an environment in which I always have something to do. As with any new thing, there were challenges involved, but at Coe Capital it doesn’t take very long to catch onto things. Coe Capital is certainly a company where I am able to gain the most experience in the hedge fund industry.

Inside my CFS classroom, it is very interesting and inspiring. I have great classmates, and the fact that you get the chance to learn about your peers’ internship experiences is such an advantage for your internship and any jobs in the future. You learn the ins and outs of different industries, which will help you in your future job search. The work we have to do for CFS is typically a weekly blog pertaining to the topic of that week. For example, the topic last week was “Culture in the Workplace.” We have a different moderator each week and they post an article about that topic. It is interesting to see different viewpoints on the matter. We also have to write a thought piece and case study during the internship. It can pretty much relate to anything in the business world. At the end of the internship, we have a final paper regarding our experience. These projects help you think outside the box and dive into something out of regulatory school work.

My internship and CFS classroom experience are definitely correlated with each other. As I noted above, you learn from your peers and you also learn the different aspects of the business world whether it be culture, power, or networks. You will use what you learn in the classroom in your internship, no doubt about that. CFS is an unbelievable experience, and everyone should find the time to be involved in this internship experience.
