The event is sponsored by Deutschlandjahr USA 2018/2019 / Year of German-American Friendship, initiated by the German Federal Foreign Office and the Goethe-Institut, and supported by the Federation of German Industries (BDI). It is co-organized and supported by Northwestern University, the Chicago Architecture Center, the Goethe-Institut Chicago, the German Consulate in Chicago, the Northern Illinois AATG, the Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities, the Council on Language Instruction at Northwestern University, and the Elmhurst Art Museum. Co-sponsors of the 7th annual German College Immersion Day further include Elmhurst College, Harper College, Northern Illinois University, College of DuPage, and the University of Chicago.

This 3-day interdisciplinary symposium is organized to celebrate the centenary of the Bauhaus, one of the world’s most innovative art and design schools and movements, and to highlight its tremendous global influence. The German Bauhaus, known for its hands-on approach and its linear, functional, but elegant forms, was founded on April 1, 1919, in Weimar, and continued to operate during the Weimar Republic until 1933, when numerous artists and architects emigrated. Many moved to the USA and to Chicago, such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and László Moholy-Nagy. Perspectives will be shared via presentations, workshops, displays, and performances that illuminate the Bauhaus’ many connections to various disciplines, from art and architecture, theatre, music, dance, and mixed media, to the politics of the Weimar Republic and urbanism in the city of Chicago, and to pedagogical approaches to teaching the Bauhaus and architecture in the German Studies and Language curriculum.
