Xiao Wang, Director, Appellate Advocacy Center

Xiao Wang is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law and the Director of the Appellate Advocacy Center.  He has practiced in and prevailed in several federal appellate courts, including the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth, Ninth, and Eleventh Circuits, as well as the Board of Immigration Appeals.  His research interests include immigration, federal courts, and constitutional law, and his scholarship has been published of is forthcoming in Vanderbilt Law Review, Michigan Law Review Online, and California Law Review Online.

Prior to joining the Northwestern faculty, Xiao was in private practice, at Williams & Connolly LLP and Wilkinson Stekloff LLP.  He clerked for the Honorable Karen N. Moore, of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and for the Honorable Lucy H. Koh, then of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California (and now for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit).

Xiao graduated from the University of Virginia, where he was a Jefferson Scholar, and Yale Law School, where he was a Truman Scholar.

 

 

Carter G. Phillips, Co-Director, Supreme Court Clinic

Carter Phillips is a Partner at Sidley Austin LLP and an Adjunct Professor at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, where he serves as a Co-Director of the Supreme Court Clinic.  He has been a Director of the Supreme Court Clinic since its founding, and is one of the country’s most experienced Supreme Court and appellate lawyers.

Carter has argued more than ninety cases before the Supreme Court, which is more than any other individual in private practice; has argued in every federal circuit court; and has argued more than three dozen cases before the Federal Circuit.  Carter has published widely, with articles or other pieces in Northwestern University Law Review, Washington and Lee Law Review, and University of Miami Law Review.  He is also, with Jeff Green, Sarah Schrup, and Susan Provenzano, the author of Advanced Appellate Advocacy.

Before joining Sidley, Carter served as an Assistant to the Solicitor General.  Carter clerked for the Honorable Robert Sprecher, of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and the Honorable Warren E. Burger, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.  Carter graduated from the Ohio State University and Northwestern Law School.

 

 

Jeffrey T. Green, Co-Director, Supreme Court Clinic

Jeffrey Green is a Partner at Sidley Austin LLP and Co-Director of the Supreme Court Clinic.  He has served as lead counsel or co-counsel in a number of ground-breaking Supreme Court cases, including Gall v. United States, Apprendi v. New Jersey, and United States v. Booker.

At Sidley, Jeff serves as Chair of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee.  Prior to joining Sidley, Jeff clerked for the Honorable Jerry E. Smith, of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.  Along with Carter Phillips, Sarah Schrup, and Susan Provenzano, Jeff is the author of Advanced Appellate Advocacy, a casebook considered  essential reading for appellate advocates.

Jeff graduated from Cornell University (B.A.), the University of Texas at Austin (M.A.), and the University of California Davis School of Law.

 

 

Meredith R. Aska McBride, Co-Director, Supreme Court Clinic

Meredith McBride is an Associate at Sidley Austin LLP and Co-Director of the Supreme Court Clinic.  Her relationship with the Clinic dates back to her time in law school, when she worked as a student lawyer on Kahler v. Kansas.  She has since served as lead counsel on numerous merits, amicus, and certiorari briefs.

Prior to joining Sidley, Meredith clerked for the Honorable David F. Hamilton, of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and for the Honorable Edmond E. Chang, of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.  Meredith’s research has been published in the Journal of Law and Education, Northwestern University Law Review, and University of Cincinnati Law Review.

Meredith is a graduate of Northwestern Law, where she received the John Paul Stevens Prize, the University of Chicago (Ph.D. and M.A.), and the University of Pennsylvania (B.A.).

 

 

Nicolas Martinez, Co-Director, Federal Appellate Clinic

Nicolas Martinez is a Partner at Bartlit Beck LLP and Co-Director of the Federal Appellate Clinic.  He maintains an active pro bono practice, serving as co-lead counsel for a group of Black voters challenging election processes for Georgia’s Public Service Commission.

Prior to joining Bartlit Beck, Nico clerked for the Honorable Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, of the Supreme Court of California, the Honorable John T. Noonan, of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and for the Honorable Lucy H. Koh, of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.  Nico was an editor for the Stanford Law Review and member of the Stanford Supreme Court Clinic.  

Nico is a graduate of Stanford Law and Stanford University.

 

 

 

Maggie Bahnson & Kelsey Handschuh, Project Assistants, Supreme Court Clinic

Maggie Bahnson and Kelsey Handschuh, from Sidley Austin, are Project Assistants for the Supreme Court Clinic.  Maggie and Kelsey work together to cite-check, proofread, and file briefs at the Court; monitor case developments; and coordinate with co-counsel and Clinic faculty, staff, and students.  Maggie is a graduate of St. Olaf College, and Kelsey is a graduate of the University of Illinois.

 

 

 

 

Angelia Starks, Legal Assistant, Federal Appellate Clinic

Angie Starks is a Legal Assistant for the Federal Appellate Clinic.  Angie is instrumental in coordinating filings and processing Clinic logistics.
