Shawn Thigpen

Cohort: 3

Where are you from?

I am from the southeast side of Chicago.

Why did you decide to apply to NPEP?

I decided to apply to NPEP so that I could further my education and be an example to all my nieces and nephews. Showing them that no matter what life problems they may encounter, they too can push through and accomplish their goals.

What does being a part of NPEP mean to you?

Being a part of this program means the world to me! Being given an opportunity like this doesn’t happen to inmates often because we’re oftentimes looked at as not deserving of any chances like this. So to me and my cohort, it’s a blessing!

What has been your favorite NPEP reading?

My favorite reading has been Jeanne Bishop’s “Change of Heart: Justice, Mercy, and Making Peace with my Sister’s Killer.” Forgiveness is something very powerful and it’s truly a BLESSING to be forgiven! I believe most inmates in prison have true remorse for what they’ve done. I know that I do.

What is something you would like others to know about you as a student?

As a student, I’m driven to learn and succeed.
