Where are you from?
What is your favorite field of study/topic?
Entrepreneurship and activism.
What is something you would like people to know about you as a student?
I am a firm believer that education can dramatically affect one’s trajectory in life. The more one learns and is shown how to apply that knowledge, the better their chances at legitimate success. Thus, I try my best to always live up to the maxim “each one, teach one,” playing my part in the uplifting of minds and betterment of lives.
What does being a part of NPEP mean to you?
Being a part of NPEP has allowed me to become a student and equal to several amazing people. I can’t say that any of my old friends have similar goals or a drive that matches mine (no one from before my incarceration). However, my NPEP family has exposed me to like-minded and similarly driven individuals.
What course has had the biggest impact on you and why?
The course that had the biggest impact on me was the screenwriting class with Professor Brett. It was the very first class I stepped foot in and acted as a means of confirmation for me. From the moment I received my first project I knew, “Yeah, I can perform on this level.”
What is your favorite book or article that you have read in your NPEP classes?
My favorite article was a piece I read in my criminal justice reading class pertaining to changes in California state laws. It revealed to me just how far behind our state is when it comes to improving our justice system. Nevertheless, it also served as a beacon of hope that one day we’ll see the reforms we need.
What assignment (paper, project, homework) have you found the most rewarding?
The most rewarding project for me was a journalistic piece I did on the felony murder rule. It challenged me to learn the intricacies of a genre of writing that was foreign to me. Also, it allowed me to highlight the unjust circumstances of two of my fellow classmates.
