Orlando Watkins

Cohort: 2

Where are you from?

Chicago.

What is your favorite field of study/topic?

History and philosophy.

What is something you would like people to know about you as a student?

I’ve been dedicated to educating myself since 2009. Meaning I spend most of my time reading, writing, and encouraging my peers to do the same.

What does being a part of NPEP mean to you?

Being part of NPEP is extremely important to me because it gives me the space and opportunity to express myself intellectually and be in the company of like-minded individuals.

What course has had the biggest impact on you and why?

Honestly, I appreciate all the courses because they challenged me in different ways. However, the philosophy class was a bit more interesting primarily because it was more interactive, due to the subjective nature of philosophy.

What is your favorite book or article that you have read in your NPEP classes?

Thus far the best book I’ve read is Prof. Cornel West’s book “Race Matters.” And it was the best for me because Prof. West is an intellectual god to me, so I genuinely enjoyed studying his work.

What assignment (paper, project, homework) have you found the most rewarding?

In my first semester in chemistry, I chose diamonds as a topic to write my essay about and I was completely blown away by the history, chemical makeup, and the overall impact diamonds have had on the world economically and politically.
