Mohammad Salahat

Where are you from?

I’m from the south suburbs of Chicago, Oak Lawn to be exact, but my heart forever resides in Palestine.

Why did I decide to apply to NPEP?

I decided to apply to NPEP because in a way, I am searching for validation. Despite obtaining my G.E.D. and completing a couple courses, I have yet to feel fulfillment. Getting accepted into NPEP has been my greatest achievement thus far, and I can only imagine how I will feel once I walk across the stage, God-willing.

What does being a part of NPEP mean to you?

Being a part of NPEP has been life changing. I was incarcerated at the age of 17 and in my 13 years of incarceration, I have never felt so welcomed and surrounded by so many people who are genuinely invested and care about my success and happiness, outside of family and friends.

What are you most looking forward to as an NPEP student?

I am most looking forward to the person I will become. I have always heard of the saying, “the sky is the limit”, but can honestly say I truly believe it now.

What is something you would like others to know about you as a student?

I would like other people to know I am caring, loving, and a helpful individual. I gain much satisfaction and happiness not only in my own achievements, but also in uplifting and helping those around me. So, don’t hesitate to ask!

What is a fact about yourself that others might find surprising?

Something people might find surprising about me is that I taught myself how to read Arabic so I could better understand The Holy Quran. I am most proud of being Muslim and Palestinian, and am a SUPER anime fan!
