Marquis Harrison

Cohort: 3

Where are you from?

Chicago.

Why did you decide to apply to NPEP?

I decided to apply for NPEP because I always wanted to go to college. I’ve been incarcerated since I was 16 years old, and I felt this was a second chance/redemption to be able to fulfill that dream and complete it. I’m most excited about being able to broaden my intellectual/educational horizons and be able to share my perspective on the things I’ll learn along the way.

What does being a part of NPEP mean to you?

It means I am being able to show the world that people can change if given the opportunity and that I am able to maximize my potential as a citizen of my community and society as a whole.

What has been your favorite NPEP reading?

My favorite reading is every theory on punishment and incarceration we’ve read. There are things that were already on my radar but being able to put empirical facts and epistemic evidence to things I had questions about gives me a sense of understanding.

What is something you would like others to know about you as a student?

I like to think outside the box and allow not only myself but others to think outside the box. Also, I’m very receptive to learning other ways to learn subjects.

What is a fact about yourself others might find surprising?

Even though I play sports with my left hand, I’m actually right-handed.
