Hugo Ocon

Cohort: 3

Where are you from?

I am currently in Stateville Correctional Center, awaiting my return to my homeland of Chicago.

Why did you decide to apply to NPEP?

This is an opportunity to bring my family peace and, regardless of my circumstances, give back to my parents for their sacrifice in migrating from Mexico. I am most excited about meeting positive and highly intellectual individuals to grow and learn from.

What does being a part of NPEP mean to you?

Being part of NPEP means perseverance, and growth personally, academically and intellectually.

What is something you would like others to know about you as a student?

Growing up as a student, I have always limited my own capabilities. I’m currently learning to appreciate and embrace challenges.

What is a fact about yourself others might find surprising?

Prior to my incarceration, I dropped out of high school. I obtained my GED in prison and was enrolled in North Park’s master’s degree program before transferring to NPEP.
