De’Andre Robinson

Cohort: 3

Where are you from?

Chicago’s South Side.

Why did you decide to apply to NPEP?

Education is really important to me. There is so much to learn yet so little time to learn it. For this reason, I’m determined to gain as much useful knowledge as possible. Excited is not the word I would use to describe the emotions of eventually earning a bachelor’s degree. I am present and enjoying the day-to-day experience of working toward my goals.

What does being a part of NPEP mean to you?

The opportunity is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. As such, I value it tremendously.

What has been your favorite NPEP reading?

“The New Jim Crow” by Michelle Alexander. Because of the way in which she was able to bring clarity—in words understandable to the common person—to such a complex and dehumanizing ongoing injustice. It’s important for the world to know.

What is something you would like others to know about you as a student?

I’m driven and authentic, and despite my rough and tough appearance, I’m really a sensitive guy.

What is a fact about yourself others might find surprising?

I’m an open book. If you’re willing to take the time to get to know me, you will come to love me.
