Cohort: 1

Where are you from: Chicago

What is your favorite field of study/topic: Undecided

What is something you would like people to know about you as a student?

I’m very huge on “loyalty” and “trust.” I believe wholeheartedly in friendship and will always stand by the side of those I respect. These qualities make me a great student, what I want for me, I desire for the students in NPEP. I stand abreast to the students here and pledge my loyalty and trust to the professors.

What does being a part of NPEP mean to you?

Being a part of NPEP gave me a birds eye view of myself, I learned that I’m better than I thought. Being in the program gave me pride. I made it in fresh after getting a G.E.D. and though I wasn’t so good with the course, I’ve gotten better. NPEP makes us better; better students, better men, and better teachers. Being a student in NPEP changed my perception on life. I feel like a human again when I’m in the classroom.

What course has had the biggest impact on you and why?

The courses we take at NPEP are all impactful, and carefully organized. To name one over another is fruitless. Each course is a part of a collective action to advance me in my future pursuit. From biology to chemistry and every study within that universe is effective. For example, sociology helped me understand Border Literature, as chemistry helped me with philosophy as well as political science- understanding how the mind works. Law and math are also wonderful galaxies in this universal course (NPEP). Side note: this course is the playwright to my educational advancement.

What is your favorite book or article that you have read in your NPEP classes?

Without going into great details, I am torn between two books that I still read and study: “Between the World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates, and “Cook County” by Nicole Gonzalez Van Cleve. These books both depict my reality growing up Black and in Cook County.

What assignment (paper, project, homework) have you found the most rewarding?

I honestly try to hold onto the knowledge taught to me. My professors have all been amazing. I don’t have enough space to give a description of an assignment I find most rewarding. Being in the program, and proactive in the program is the biggest reward.
