Eye on Education Podcast Episode 1

This podcast looks at Paula Freire’s book Pedagogy of the Oppressed and the concept of the Banking and Problem-Solving system that it suggests. Through this podcast, we explain both concepts and present them to our interviewees, both a professor and a student, to share their thoughts and opinions on the concepts. The interviewees both were able to yield responses that conveyed not only their experience with both concepts but also showed the consequences you get with each one. In order to develop the conversation, we extracted certain excerpts from the book that related to the banking system being oppressive or making individuals as objects.
We specifically looked at the description of alienation which human beings feel in the banking system of education since they are deprived of their own decision making since they are not encouraged to critically think from themselves. Consequently, we were able with our interviewees to identify the drawbacks of the banking system of education. In the final part of our conversations, we looked at a critical point of view about Freire’s problem-solving concept and where it placed our interviewees in a position to either go with or against it. Furthermore, this conveyed their true position on the topic.

  1. This is a great podcast and the concept of the banking system of education is a very interesting discussion. I agree with professor Jocelyn that the content and structure of our education could be limiting us to the diversity of our expertise.
