CFS is a once in a lifetime opportunity where CFS advisors will unlock the Northwestern network to help students get an internship in the field of their choosing. I have been working at Goldman Sachs & Co. for the past quarter and have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the company. Over the course of my internship I have been lucky enough to be on two of the largest teams. One of which is one of the most established teams at Goldman, Team_47, and the other being a team comprised of about ten newer less developed teams Team_Core. Being on Core has been one of if not the best experiences in my time at Goldman. It has given me an opportunity to work on projects which are directly client facing and has allowed me to touch many different aspects of the business. For example, these past few weeks I have had the opportunity to help rebalance portfolios when extra cash becomes available. I propose where we should put the extra cash whether that be in US Equities, Muni Bonds or other securities/positions, then speak with my supervisors and get approval to do so. Since none of the interns are licensed to trade or give financial advice, I then send the proposed allocations to a full time financial analyst who gives the final go ahead and makes the necessary trades/rebalances.
Pairing this internship with the course Business Field studies has allowed me to draw on class discussions and topics and apply the ideas directly in the workforce. For example, we spoke fairly early on in the course about workplace culture. Using this discussion, I began looking more closely on what aspects of Goldman’s culture is unique which served me very well and helped me fit in and get to know my colleges better for the rest of my internship. This opportunity has given me experiences that I will be able to apply to whatever field I choose to go into after college and has allowed me to put a world class financial institution on my resume. CFS has definitely been one of the best experiences I have had so far in my time at Northwestern.
