Why Live in CCS?

Why CCS?

Gain a Unique Social Experience
CCS provides residents with a close-knit community that they can call home. Contrasting larger dorms and residential colleges, at CCS, there are always people in the lounge hanging out and working together. People become non-resident members at CCS just because of the open and welcoming community of friends. Members from previous years come back as non-residents to continue the close bonds they formed during their stay at CCS and join in the merry-making.

Cultivate Passions
CCS is about complementing your college experience with your other passions and interests. It is rather easy in college to get lost in the schedule of homework, classes, food and sleep. Finding time for your other passions or to discover new ones can be difficult. CCS creates an environment that promotes exploring the things you love. We are a diverse group of students, spanning many fields of interest and backgrounds. The close-friendships formed across disciplines and cultures foster growth beyond what could occur in the classroom by preventing CCSers from neglecting the side of them that really cares about cooking or music and art or giraffes.

“CCS is the greatest place to live because of the amazing community. I felt welcome the moment I walked through the door and have found so many great friends. We also have the opportunity to explore and engage with the greater community on campus, in Evanston, and in Chicago. The fellows are also really friendly and approachable and let’s you make important and strong connections with faculty that you won’t get anywhere else. ”
-Nicholas Liou, WCAS’ 20

“CCS is home.  There is no community on campus that I have found that is as welcoming and friendly as CCS.  From my first day in the lounge, to months later when new members were joining as non-residents, everyone is always welcomed like they are family.  I look up to the older CCS members and they, and my freshman peers are always available to talk to me and give advise.  CCS is truly a place where a family is made.”
-Alan Grampp, MEAS’ 20

“I love CCS because it’s small but powerful! We do fun social events that take you to learn something about a culture and community (and their food!) As an international student, I feel so good to live in a community that does cultural stuff in a fun (and delicious) way. CCS is just like a big family where everyone is so good and close to each other. You’ll know it the moment you join us. ”
– Ivy Zheng, MEAS ’17

“CCS is really warm and welcoming, and of course tons of fun! Coming into Northwestern, I was afraid of getting lost in the overachieving crowd. But living in a res college as small and tight as CCS means that it’s easy to form close relationships. Most of my closest friends are from CCS or GREEN House, and I wouldn’t give it up for any other dorm. If you want to go out and party, you can. If you want to stay in and hang out with friends, you can do that too.”
-Lauren Thomas, WCAS ’17

Look forward to building community and making memories with new friends here at CCS!

What to Look Forward to at CCS:

  • Weekly munchies events where students host fun activities
  • Firesides where we learn about interesting or relevant topics
  • Hanging out in the lounge together
  • Going on trips to Chicago and learning about different cultural neighborhoods and so much more 🙂

  1. I lived in CCS as an undergraduate back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Some of my best memories! I forged incredible friendships that made my undergraduate years rich and rewarding, and those bonds lasted well beyond graduation.

  2. We’re planning a reunion of the founding members of CCS (1972) for next October (in the S.F. Bay Area where we had our summer programs) . . . one small data point attesting to the type of long-term friendships and deep roots we formed in the Residential College experience.
