What does a CCS room come with?
Each resident gets a personal:
-
- Bed
- Beds cannot be lofted in 2303 in accordance with University policy, but beds have variable height and can be raised to give more storage space if desired.
- Beds also cannot have bed risers placed under them in accordance with University policy.
- Beds are all outfitted with twin XL mattresses, and mattress toppers are allowed.
- Desk with lamp
- The desks have a hutch with a shelf and two cubbies on top, a flat drawer flush with the writing surface, and two larger drawers (one lockable) that can be moved.
- Dimensions: 38.5″ wide x 25.5″ deep x 30″ tall (desk), 38.5″ wide x 12″ deep x 36″ tall (hutch)
- No need to bring a desklamp unless you want extra lighting!
- Desk chair
- Wardrobe with hanging rods OR built-in-closet (depends on the room)
- 2 dressers
- The dressers have two drawers each, measuring 26″ wide by 14.5″ deep by 7″ tall (for a drawer interior)
- Bed
Each room also contains:
- Recycling and trash bins (these are emptied into larger bins found in the hallways, which are emptied daily)
- Overhead lighting
- One or more individual heating/AC units
What should I bring to CCS?
Clothing and Such:
- Shirts, pants, socks, underwear, pajamas, etc.
- Workout/exercise clothes, potentially including a bathing suit for the indoor swimming pool and/or beach
- 1-2 formal outfits for interviews, formals, and other important events (there are resources on campus to borrow and/or purchase formal wear if needed)
- Sweatshirts, coats, gloves, hats, scarves, long underwear, etc.
- Rain and snow boots, waterproof pants, etc.
- Shoes, including formal shoes, shower shoes (CCS showers are very clean, but you’re still sharing a bathroom with other residents), sneakers, and slippers to move around the dorm
The Midwest can often experience all four seasons in a single day, so make sure you always have a good mix of clothes for all weather – rain, shine, snow, or wind – on campus!
For Your Room:
- Sheets, blankets, pillow, comforter, etc.
- Extension cord, power strip, chargers
- Toiletries
- First-aid supplies (think bandages, over-the-counter medicine, etc.)
- Towels and washcloths
- Laundry basket/hamper, detergent, etc.
- School supplies
- Decorations for your room – nothing can be tacked into the wall, so bring Command strips or another removable adhesive
- Alarm clock
- An umbrella
- Hangers
- Dishes and silverware (CCS has basic cookware in the kitchen to share)
- Cleaning supplies, including cleaning spray, a broom and dustpan, a mop, a vacuum, etc. (not all supplies need to be brought with you, as CCSers are more than happy to share!)
- Hand sanitizer and disinfectant
Larger Dorm Necessities
-
- Mini-fridge (interior must be smaller than 3.1 cubic feet)
- Storage shelves (all CCS residents have a closet and two small dressers, but most people find that more storage is helpful)
If you don’t feel like lugging these bulky items up to your room on move-in, RezEssentials, Northwestern’s official mini-fridge provider, sells and will deliver these products straight to your room before move in!
Bringing a personal printer is not necessary, as CCS has a black-and-white printer for all residents in the dorm! There are also several printers to use on campus (i.e Mudd Library, Sargent Hall, Multicultural Center, etc.)
Miscellaneous Useful Items
- Headphones
- Extra batteries (for calculators, etc.)
- A doorstop or brick
- Board games or gaming consoles (CCSers frequently play games late into the night. Have a favorite? Bring it!)
- External hard drive
- A small duffel bag or backpack (for Thanksgiving break and camping/short weekend trips)
- A carry-on (or larger) suitcase (for longer breaks and more distant travel)
- Extra lighting – the room lighting can be both too bright and not bright enough
Try to be reasonable about how much you bring – remember that you’ll be accumulating new things over the course of the entire year and you have very limited space in a dorm room!
