Dr. Myrna García is an interdisciplinary scholar interested in critical ethnic studies, race and ethnicity, Latinx im/migration, Chicana/Latina feminism, and Latino History. Her signature course is “Latinx Chicago: Positionality, Community Histories, & Academic Knowledges.” Dr. García’s research documents the activism undertaken by members of the Chicago chapter of the Center for Autonomous Social Action (CASA), an important immigrant rights organization to emerge from the Chicano Movement, the Mexican American civil rights movement. CASA activists adopted a “sin fronteras politics,” a transnational imagining that brought ethnic Mexicans together, regardless of birthplace, generation, or citizenship status. Her scholarship uncovers the genealogies of the political ideologies articulated by immigrant rights activists in the twenty-first century. It is timely given the current immigration debates. Dr. García is also a college adviser in Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. She serves as a resource for students navigating their academic lives at the university.
