As of January 14, 2020 Microsoft is no longer supporting Windows 7

• No more software updates
• No more security fixes or patches
• No more technical support
• It is DEAD!!!

So what can you do if you, your research lab, or your students are still using a computer running on Windows 7? The best answer I can give you is: Upgrade to Windows 10.

If you’re still running Windows 7 as your primary computer, we need to have a serious discussion about getting you a new computer.

Honestly, talk to your department assistant, reach out to NUIT-Weinberg IT Support for guidance at consultant@northwestern.edu. Also take a look at the University and Weinberg’s recommended computer models.

If you have a personally owned computer still on Windows 7, it’ll cost you to do your own upgrade – about $140 for the cheapest version of the operating system – Windows 10 Home, or $199 for Windows 10 Pro.

You don’t have to upgrade right way, and you can still run Windows 7 indefinitely according to Microsoft – it’s just not a great idea in terms of security. Microsoft will not release any security updates or patches for Windows 7, and your computer will become more vulnerable to exploits and cyber criminals.
