Women in Leadership Workshops Explore Gender in a Modern Context

This past fall, Northwestern’s Leadership and Community Engagement department (housed within Campus Life) introduced its new series, Women in Leadership. This cohort meets six times over the course of one quarter to discuss and explore various aspects of the intersection between gender and leadership.

“We have a pretty multifaceted mission,” Assistant Director of Leadership & Community Engagement Adrian Bitton said.“Ultimately what we want to do is empower women and build their leadership self-efficacy.”

Connecting Through Research and the Residential Experience

Lunch discussions and fireside chats can lead students to research opportunities with faculty mentors. Residential college faculty fellows, as well as faculty across the university, hire students new to research and mentor them through the Undergraduate Research Assistance Program (URAP).

SIGP 2017: Financial Support for Student Summer Experiences

NCA’s Summer Internship Grant Program (SIGP) is celebrating its 10th anniversary! From its beginnings in 2007 with 90 applications and 10 awards, SIGP has grown into a thriving and active program which provides financial support for undergraduate Northwestern students participating in unpaid internships across the globe.

‘Build Her a Myth’ Uses Paper Dresses to Critique Feminine Culture

Romance novels. Lots of pages from romance novels. That’s the medium for Carrie Schumacher’s Build Her a Myth, the current exhibit at Dittmar Gallery in Norris Center. But her creation is not what you would expect. Schumacher used the pages to create life-sized (and some mini-sized) dresses, showcased on mannequins, to “examine the demands that feminine culture places upon women,” particularly at the intersection of fashion and romance.

Build Her a Myth is on display through Sunday, December 4. Read more to see video of the exhibit.

Vice President of Student Affairs, Patricia Telles-Irvin, submitted a goal to the President in the spring of 2015 to better understand and strategically think about how to improve the Black student experience. The need to explore and address the needs of Northwestern’s Black students led the Division of Student Affairs creation of the Black Student Experience Task Force.
