What's happening in the South Area?
An Introduction to the Area Councils
Living on campus at Northwestern provides students with unique opportunities to engage with their residential
communities. One of the ways students can get involved is through the Area Councils. These student-led organizations play an essential role in shaping the residential experience by planning activities, promoting community engagement and developing leadership skills among participants.
Renovations to Modernize 1835 Hinman Residence Hall
Northwestern has announced plans to renovate Bobb-McCulloch Hall and 1835 Hinman, creating enhanced residential experiences in the core of both north and south campus.
“The renovation project is an exciting endeavor, especially as it ties to stewardship, student belonging and well-being,” Residential Services Director of Operations and Services Jenny Douglas said. “We’re reimagining what these residence halls could be while emphasizing more accessible design, opportunities for engagement and enhancements to overall infrastructure.”

Gratitude is Good for You
Tapping into the theory and practice of positive psychology, the subject of a special campus lecture, Faculty-in-Residence Rifka Cook invited residents of Allison to write thank you cards to veterans on Memorial Day. This event has evolved into a quarterly tradition of expressing gratitude–to friends, to people who helped students get to Northwestern, and others.
Commemorating 50 Years of Student Activism
Protest is an integral part of Northwestern history, and student activism lies deep in Wildcat tradition. To help mark the 50th anniversary of the Bursar’s Office takeover, the South Area collaborated with University Archives to organize an exhibit highlighting activism from that seminal episode to recent marches to protest gun violence.
Wildcats Explore Wakanda
Faculty-in-Residence Melissa Foster invited a group of residents to go see the premiere of Black Panther. Before the show, guests swarmed her home in Shepard for a Hecky’s Barbecue dinner. Comic book store owner Terry Gant got students oriented (and hyped!) by talking about the relevance of the film, the importance of representation, and the history behind the comic.

Community Garden
Faculty-in-Residence Dr. Ava Thompson Greenwell has been building and harvesting a community garden in the South Area to help combat food insecurity on Northwestern’s Campus. Every other week, she invites a group of students to help harvest and bring the fresh fruits and vegetables to the Purple Pantry. Scroll to 13:15 to learn more about these efforts!
