Dear Northwestern Staff:

Welcome to 2023.  I hope you and your families are well and the winter break was a time of rest and recharge.

The winter quarter marks another opportunity to deepen our connections within the staff community.   We hope that you will engage with NUSAC, the other staff affinity groups and the Well-being Programs on campus. The collective efforts foster connections that can enhance the work experience.

NUSAC continues to build and cultivate relationships with President Schill, Vice President Goffe and other administrators.  Please share with us what you want them to know about the staff experience at Northwestern.  It is important that we understand the experiences of the broader staff community.  Thank you in advance for your feedback.

In the spirit of fostering deeper connections, NUSAC is excited to launch a listserv.  The listserv will allow us to share pertinent staff events and opportunities. Please note you have to opt-in to receive communications.

We also invite you and your families to join NUSAC for the Winter Staff Mixer taking place on Thursday, February 23rd at a Women’s Basketball game. Complimentary tickets will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Please save the date. Details on requesting tickets will be posted at the link above.

Thank you for all that you do for Northwestern.

With Gratitude,

Joan Trimuel Williams

NUSAC Chair

The Heart’s Knowledge: Science and Empathy in the Art of Dario Robleto; January 26- July 9, 2023

Northwestern’s Block Museum of Art For American artist Dario Robleto (b. 1972), artists and scientists share a common aspiration: to increase the sensitivity of their observations. Throughout the history of scientific invention, instruments like the cardiograph and the telescope have extended the reach of perception from the tiniest stirrings of the human body to the farthest reaches of space. In his prints, sculptures, and video and sound installations, Robleto contemplates the emotional significance of these technologies, bringing us closer to the latent traces of life buried in the scientific record.

On the Same Terms: 150 Years of Women at Northwestern

On June 23, 1869, the Board of Trustees recorded the decision to admit women to Northwestern: “Resolved that we approve of the admission of young women to the classes of the University upon the same terms and conditions as young men…” The path leading from that handwritten declaration to today was not simple nor immediate. The exhibition draws on records, photographs, and correspondence from University Archives to examine the 1869 decision and the twisty and tenuous path Northwestern took to educating college-age women.

 Unconscious Bias Workshop

Unconscious Bias Workshop

A two-part workshop on Unconscious Bias is available to all staff in myHR Learn.

Unconscious Bias is a foundational Diversity, Equity and Inclusion workshop designed to raise your awareness about biases that exist in our daily interactions. You will be asked to participate in exercises that explore our biases and where they came from as well as an understanding of how to be more aware of them through an assessment and best practices discussion. This workshop is a pre-requisite to attending our Active Inclusive workshop.

You will leave this workshop with an understanding of unconscious biases – what they are and why we have them, an exploration of individual social identities & how that relates to bias, the ability to identify how biases impact individual thoughts & actions, the ability to identify how biases impact our work & the Northwestern community at large and best practices to mitigate unconscious bias.

February 15 , 2023 9am-11am and February 16, 2023 9am-11am.

For more information on this and to register, please visit MyHR Learn.
