UPCOMING EVENTS | REMINDERS | CALL TO ACTION | PREVIOUS NEWSLETTERS
As we conclude Spring Quarter, there is a lot to reflect on and a lot to look forward to in the coming months. The weather is turning towards Summer and with the decline of COVID cases (and increase of vaccinations), we will see more opportunities to see friends, family, and co-workers. We will see more events occurring in-person and, with continued safety measures, a return to pre-pandemic life.
Commencement is always a time of celebration. For our graduates, it is a time to revel in your accomplishments, to take a deep breath and think back on a job well done. Though our University ceremony will once again be remote this June, many schools are planning smaller convocation events in-person so that families and graduates can celebrate together, safely. Congratulations to all students, faculty and staff that made these possible.
In April and May, NUSAC mounted two Conversations events with many of our senior leaders. Hundreds of staff participated in the two ninety minute panels where our senior leaders discussed the health of the University, the return to campus plans, and future goals as we close out this academic year. We thank all of you that sent in questions, attended the session, and helped in making it a success. For all of you that were not able to attend, check out this year’s and past years’ recordings on the Office of the President page.
As we look forward into next year, many units are making individual plans to return to campus. We want to make sure we give a shout out to each and every person who throughout these last 15 months has been going above and beyond to make this a fantastic university for our students and community, and a great place to work for our staff and faculty. Many have been working from home, many have been working on campus from the beginning. All have shown flexibility, courage, and resiliency in a time of extreme challenges and unknown futures.
We look forward to the coming year. We look forward to using what we learned in this time of being nimble in constantly pivoting work environments. We can’t wait to see you in person.
Have an excellent, relaxing and restorative Summer.
Stay healthy, stay safe.
Go ‘Cats!

Call to Action
NU Cares Donation Drive
NUSAC invites you to learn more about the NU Cares program, a fund that supports NU employees who are experiencing financial hardship due to a medical or catastrophic event. Since 2010, the NU Cares fund has provided more than $100,000 to 166 employees in need. More than 170 employees give monthly to support the fund. In 2020, we celebrated the tenth anniversary of NU Cares – an incredible testament to the generosity and commitment of our community. We hope to expand our reach in 2021 to support our fellow employees as we continue to navigate a challenging and unpredictable season.
We encourage staff to consider a direct payroll deduction of $1, $5, or $10 to support NU Cares and our colleagues in need. Recurring contributions provide predictable revenue streams that enable the NU Cares Application Review Committee to more effectively distribute as much funding as possible.
Please visit the NUSAC website to learn more about donating or applying for assistance.
Presidential Search
The University’s Board of Trustees, along with a 36-member search committee to advise them, will select a candidate to become the next visionary president of Northwestern. It is vital that Northwestern staff use their voice and engage in this process as much as possible.
The Search Committee has developed a website to solicit your input and advice through the presidential search. This is your opportunity to share your ideas – and nominations – for our next president.
Be sure to also visit the website frequently for news and updates on the search process.
Preparing to Return to Campus
Staff members who have been working remotely are encouraged to review the online tools and information provided by the University to help prepare for the transition back to campus. Resources include:
Past Events
Conversations with the President
In his 22nd Conversations with the President event, co-sponsored by the Northwestern University Staff Advisory Council (NUSAC), President Schapiro reflected on the pandemic’s impact on campus safety, what we’ve learned as an institution and where we’re headed as restrictions begin to loosen. Topics covered include faculty and staff recognition, vaccine information, social justice and looking ahead to the future.
Be sure to visit Northwestern News as for a comprehensive summary of the April 13th event or watch the recording online.
Conversations with Senior Leadership
Conversations with Senior Leaders are opportunities for leadership to discuss key issues facing the University with staff, faculty and students. The forums, which are sponsored and hosted by the Northwestern University Staff Advisory Council (NUSAC), are webcast live.
A recording of the May 18th event will be posted online soon.
