LETTER FROM THE CHAIR | UPCOMING EVENTS | REMINDERS | CALL TO ACTION |PAST EVENTS | PREVIOUS NEWSLETTERS
Dear Northwestern Staff:
I hope the start of spring is sparking new perspectives and renewed purpose. Despite the temperatures, things are still budding outside. It is this same attitude that we embrace as the University is evolving and we wait to see what the future holds. Continue to engage and connect with others as these interactions can enhance the work experience.
Thank you to our amazing community for responding to our request for volunteers for Purple Pantry and the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Volunteer slots were filled within a few hours. We appreciate your commitment to giving back and we will expand opportunities in the future. In the interim, please consider donating to the Purple Pantry, ‘Cat’s Closet or NU Cares. There are individuals within our community that could use our assistance.
We also invite you and your families to join NUSAC for the Spring Staff Mixer taking place on Saturday, May 6 at 1pm at a baseball game and pre-game mixer. Complimentary tickets will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please save the date. Details on requesting tickets will be posted soon at the link above.
Finally, please consider joining the listserv and sharing your feedback at nusac@northwestern.edu or reach out to the Council members.
With Gratitude,

Juneteenth Official University Holiday
Beginning in 2022, the University officially recognized Juneteenth as an official University holiday.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when some of the last enslaved African Americans in Texas learned that the Civil War had ended, putting into effect the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued two and a half years earlier by President Abraham Lincoln.

"Queering the Holocaust." Film Screening and Q&A with historian Anna Hájková: The Amazing Life of Margot Heuman
Queering the Holocaust: The Amazing Life of Margot Heuman
Film Screening and Q&A with historian Anna Hájková (Warwick University)
Thursday, April 6, 2023, 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM Central
Kresge Hall, 1515, 1880 Campus Drive
Sponsored by the Holocaust Educational Foundation of Northwestern University
Margot Heuman (1928-2022) was a survivor of Theresienstadt ghetto, Auschwitz, Neuengamme, and Bergen-Belsen. She was also the first lesbian Holocaust survivor to record her oral history. The Amazing Life of Margot Heuman is based on transcripts of that recording. It dramatizes the interactions between Margot Heuman and Anna Hájková, the Warwick University historian who recorded their conversation in 2019. Directed by Erika Hughes, the play offers a poignant view of the coming of age of a Jewish queer woman in Nazi concentration camps. In the play, filmed at another location and screened now at Northwestern, Heuman reflects on love, choices, sexual violence and sexual barter, homophobia, and survival. Moving, funny, pragmatic, and original, Heuman’s testimony illustrates the many stories erased by homophobia and misogyny. “I am amazing,” Heuman tells her interviewer, reminding us she may remain the sole lesbian to speak about her experiences in the Holocaust.
Social Justice Tours of Northwestern
As spring emerges on campus, we encourage staff to learn more about the history of the University by participating in one of the self-guided Social Justice Tours of Northwestern. The Tours are a collaborative project of the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, the Library, and the Women’s Center. While each tour has its own history of development, aims, and scholarship, in bringing them together their hope is to accentuate the intersections of those who have worked for equity, justice, and liberation on the campus and beyond.
Current Offerings include:
-Indigenous Tour of Northwestern
-The Black Experience at Northwestern Tour
-Feminist Tour of Northwestern
You can download the Echoes App to acess the GPS self-guided tours.
The Living Image of Sound: Notes on Jazz and Protest at Northwestern
The Living Image of Sound: Notes on Jazz and Protest at Northwestern is a concise exhibition at the Block Museum through July 9 exploring the intersections of visual art, music, and student-led social justice movements during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The exhibition features artwork and ephemera related to the trailblazing poet and musician Sun Ra and The Arkestra jazz ensemble, including a painting by the musician and visual artist Ayé Aton.
