The Cambridge History of America and the World

The Cambridge History of America and the World

Volume 1: 1500–1820

The first volume of The Cambridge History of America and the World examines how the United States emerged out of a series of colonial interactions, some involving indigenous empires and communities that were already present when the first Europeans reached the Americas, others the adventurers and settlers dispatched by Europe’s imperial powers to secure their American claims, and still others men and women brought as slaves or indentured servants to the colonies that European settlers founded.

Volume 2: 1820–1900

The second volume of The Cambridge History of America and the World examines how the United States rose to great power status in the nineteenth century and how the rest of the world has shaped the United States.

Volume 3: 1900–1945

The third volume of The Cambridge History of America and the World covers the volatile period between 1900 and 1945 when the United States emerged as a world power and American engagements abroad flourished in new and consequential ways.

Volume 4: 1945 to the Present

The fourth volume of The Cambridge History of America and the World examines the heights of American global power in the mid-twentieth century and how challenges from at home and abroad altered the United States and its role in the world.
