CFS Program: Field Studies in Civic Engagement

When I originally decided to participate in CFS full time I had no idea how much joy it would bring me. I wanted a break from classes, to see the city in a new light and of course to gain experience in the field before the senior year job search. Over my time at Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art I have found more than resume padding or a letter of rec. Every day I find joy. Intuit is a small nonprofit dedicated to showcasing outsider art to the public along with engagement efforts such as educational programming, collection tours, or hands on workshops. The staff is small, but passionate, friendly, and inspiring. Every intern and volunteer is treated with respect and trust. I pictured full time–even in an arts environment–to be 9-5 computer work. Instead, each of my days is different. I can brainstorm ideas one day, implement a program the next, chaperone a field trip then test out a craft for an upcoming festival. It’s the museum equivalent to when Tom Hanks gets the toy tester job in BIG. Intuit has given me invaluable knowledge, mentors, and friends. I could not have been placed better for my internship and cannot wait to continue interning this summer.
