Tips for Letters of Recommendation
- Who makes a good recommender?
- A recommender should have knowledge of your mathematical abilities and reasoning skills. Both of your recommenders should be mathematics instructors or advisers who can write specifically about your mathematical ability and experience.
- A letter of recommendation that only describes the grades you earned and the nature of your coursework is not as helpful as a more personal appraisal. People who know you well and who enjoy their interactions with you are likely to communicate their enthusiasm about you.
- How do I obtain a letter of recommendation?
- Schedule an appointment to request the letter of recommendation in person at least three weeks before the letter is due.
- Provide your recommenders with the following materials:
- a description of the Causeway Program (such as a link to this web site),
- a résumé,
- unofficial transcripts,
- copies of your academic statement and your personal statement,
- copies of any papers or class projects that reflect positively on your academic performance, and
- submission instructions and the submission deadline.
- Keep your recommenders up-to-date on the progress of your application.
- Send thank you notes to your recommenders at the conclusion of the application process.
