The Postpartum Pain Experience

The Project
In collaboration with Dr. Nevert Badreldin, the Postpartum Pain Experience project explored topics on postpartum pain through multiple perspectives. First, funded by the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, we studied opioid utilization patterns after birth. Next, supported by Friends of Prentice, we evaluated obstetric clinician perspectives on postpartum pain management and opioid reduction interventions, as well as bias in postpartum pain management. Next, supported as a supplement to Navigating New Motherhood study, we evaluated birthing persons’ experiences with pain after cesarean delivery, as well as differences in postpartum pain experiences by self-reported race and ethnicity. Finally, supported by the NICHD, we used an implementation science framework to evaluate beliefs and factors which influence clinicians’ management of postpartum pain, and to understand their preferences for interventions to reduce postpartum pain and promote health equity after cesarean birth.
