In Ain-el-Turck, Rome, and Livorno, the 12th General Hospital Unit treated 29, 799 patients from the United States, Italy, Germany, Britain, France, Poland, the Soviet Union, Brazil, and Algeria. While the majority of the cases 12th General Hospital personnel tended to were surgical in nature, they also cared for those suffering from venereal disease and other medical conditions. The surgical section of the 12th General Hospital Unit performed extraordinarily well given the precarious circumstances in which they worked, with only fifty-three deaths being attributed to complications during an operation.
