Family Memories

Patric Anderson about Virginia N. Bugbee

Anecdotally, the best story Jim and I remember is of when my mom and some of her nurse-buddies went AWOL on board a B-17 aircraft to Rome and she had to sit in the bombardier’s position, in the nose of the plane. She said between leaning against the Top Secret Norden Bombsight and feeling as if she were outside of the plane due to being surrounded by glass she was a nervous wreck. Nonetheless she remembered this escapade fondly.

Cathy Stone about Jeanette Richoll

She smoked cigarettes back then. She was on a ship and out on the deck smoking one night. But the ship was in a ‘blackout’ situation and no one was supposed to make any lights! My brother and I remember my mother telling us how she got in big trouble! She talked about taking a bath in her helmet! Their tent hospital was attacked by fighter planes that flew in firing on them with machine guns. Mom also loved to watch MASH*; it reminded her of her experiences in the war!

Mary Ellen Stone about Jeanette Richoll

I think she, like many veterans of that war, was very private about her experiences. Our father, Stanley Stone was also a veteran. He told us several times that our mother experienced combat and was in much harsher conditions than he was, he said she was the true hero. She was on her way to Japan when Japan surrendered and her ship was turned around. She did talk about arriving in Rome right as the war was ending. The city was devastated, and as a devout Catholic I think it was particularly painful for her to witness. She talked about this when we visited as a family in the 1960s.

Harry M. Richter III about Harry M. Richter, Jr.

My Dad, Harry M Richter, Jr, graduated from Northwestern college and then Northwestern Medical school, just before the beginning of the war.  He had completed one year of Surgical training at Cook County Hospital when the US entered the war, and he joined the NU unit.  When the unit shipped out, by sea, the destination was officially secret.  However, because Dad was familiar with celestial navigation, he soon determined that the destination was North Africa.  He continued into Italy, though I’m not sure with which campaign the unit was associated.  Eventually he returned to the states, where he was preparing to be redeployed to the Pacific theater when Japan surrendered.

Meta Ruth Salisbury Hodson about Paul C. Salisbury

While I knew he was a colonel, I did not know that there were only 4 of them.  I think as a dentist, he must have been in charge of the dental dept. while other physicians must have been in charge of the hospital, surgery, and medical departments.  Of course I recognize many of the names – other dentists that shared a waiting room with my dad’s office postwar, neighbors, and our family medical and orthodontist practitioners, as well as family friends, all have of course passed on. Dental Dept Dean, Charles Freeman, was head of Northwestern’s dental unit in WWI.  My father was older and from Canada when he came to Northwestern as a dental student in the 20’s.   Dr and Mrs Freeman kind of took him under their wing.  Both my older brother and myself were named for our parents and Dr and Mrs Freeman; our families were very close. I remember photos of Northwestern’s units hanging in the hallways of the medical/dental school building in Chicago during my nurse’s training there in the late 50’s.

I see the name of Major Barney Cooksey on the roster.  We loved hearing Dad’s stories of his exploits.  We used to sing “Barney Cooksey with the goo goo googley eyes…”  To keep busy and help anyone who needed dental care, the dentists would help the local Italians.  One day the order came down that the hospital could not continue this practice.  Dentists were not to do anymore dental work on the locals in their facility.  The next day Barney had moved his chair out into the yard and was working on the locals as before but obeying the letter of the law.  Knowing that some would continue to do what they could for whoever needed care, the order became mute.  I think Barney retired to TX where he raised rabbits, peacocks and Guinea fowl.  My parents visited him once.

Dad had MANY slides of his time in the army and sent/brought the many items from North Africa and Italy.  One of the most thoughtful items he sent to us was a small box containing loads of different colored plastic buttons – Disney dwarfs, animals, faces, etc.  They still are on our red felt Christmas stockings that Mom made us.  Oil paintings done on wood, as artists canvas was not available, were on our walls growing up and I have them today.

Christopher Talbot about Charles C. Talbot

I forgot to mention that my mother served with the 12th as an RN. Her name was Helen Mary Wallace, and she came to the unit from St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago. They met in the service and were married following the war. My Dad returned to Passavant from the service to finish his medical career here in the 90’s. His dearest friends for the rest of his life were those from the 12th, and of course there were stories. I grew up in the shadows of Irve Puntney, Carroll Cameron DDS, Dr. Stuteville, and many fine others. They would all be very pleased with this remembrance.
