The department of Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) has found a new director. Daviree Velázquez Phillip started work at Northwestern University on February 12. Prior to coming to Northwestern, Phillip worked as an assistant director of diversity education at Georgetown University’s Center for Multicultural Equity and Access.
February is National Black History Month, a time to celebrate the black community while also recognizing the unique difficulties experienced by black Americans. This year, Black History Month holds even more significance for Northwestern as it is the 50th anniversary of the takeover of the Bursar’s office by the black student union.
This November, people across the country are honoring National Native American Heritage Month. While this month provides a special opportunity to celebrate indigenous culture and the contributions Native Americans have made to our country, it is important to also use this time to address the serious issues facing the Native American community.
This October, Northwestern recognizes the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community through Queer and Trans Empowerment Month. Nationally known as LGBT History Month, this annual series of programs and events aims to both educate the public on LGBTQ issues and strengthen the LGBTQ community on campus.
Days before graduation, thirteen students gathered in Scott Hall, surrounded by friends, family, and faculty to be honored in their own congratulatory ceremony. They donned rainbow stoles and celebrated their achievements as members of the LGBTQ students at Northwestern.
Lavender Graduations are held at universities across the nation to honor and acknowledge the achievements of LGBTQ students. Lavender is an important color in LGBTQ history, although the origins of the association is debated. The Human Rights Campaign says that the hue combines the two colors that Nazis used to signify gay men and lesbian women in concentration camps, pink and black, respectively. The LGBTQ rights movement repurposed these hateful symbols as a symbol of pride.
Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) kicked off Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Heritage Month this May with its annual JubilAsian celebration. The community gathered in the Louis Room on April 30 for an evening of pan-Asian food, music, and reflection.
The night began with opening remarks from MSA Assistant Director Christine Munteanu and Douglas Ishii, a visiting assistant professor in the Asian American Studies program. Both speakers encouraged contemplation Asian American history, especially in light of the May anniversaries of the first Japanese immigrants’ arrival in the United States and Chinese laborers’ completion of the transcontinental railroad.
Black History Month celebrations and reflections include campus-wide and identity-based discussions and performances. Harambee kicks of the month of programming January 27.
The Two-Spirit event, featured in Northwestern’s celebration of Native American Heritage Month, will open up an opportunity for students to explore the Native American identity through a workshop hosted by multidisciplinary Grammy winner Ty Defoe.
