Unraveling the Governing Mechanisms Behind the Chiral Nematic Self-Assembly of Cellulose-Based Polymers

Thanks to their natural abundance, cholesteric liquid crystalline polymers based on cellulose are attractive materials for environmentally friendly colorimetric sensors. This perspective sheds new light on over forty years of polysaccharide research and provides a forward-looking view through additional understanding of driving forces for self-assembly. Structural Color Out of the Blue: A Quantitative Framework for the Self-Assembly Kinetics of Cholesteric Cellulosic Mesophases

By utilizing rheology in tandem with time-resolved reflectivity measurements, a quantitative model of cholesteric self-assembly and structural color formation in cellulosic liquid crystals is realized. As the chiral nematic phase orders on the nano- and microscale, the macroscopic color of the mesophase evolves out of the blue to longer wavelength hues. Cover art by Simona Fine.

SPHERES: A MATLAB Tool for Teaching Solubility Parameter Calculations in Polymer Processing and Recycling

SPHERES is an educational MATLAB tool that simplifies solubility parameter calculations using group contribution theory.  It enables students to explore the role of molecular interactions in solubility, effectively bridging conceptual understanding with real-world application.
