The Han Lab

We are interested in the mechanisms by which lung epithelial cells are repaired after injury and by which aberrant repair occurs leading to fibrosis, especially in the elderly. We are particularly interested in mitochondrial metabolism and how cellular metabolism affects the function and fate of lung epithelial stem cells in the context of lung development and lung repair after injury.  We are also interested in how lung epithelial stem cells interact with other cell types, such as immune cells and mesenchymal cells, during repair after lung injury and the development of pulmonary fibrosis. Findings from these studies can be directly applied to patients hospitalized with pneumonia, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2 infection, as well as lung transplant recipients in our hospital.
