The End of Windows 7 Security Updates

In the News

In Microsoft warns Windows 7 users of looming end to security updates, Zack Whittaker at TechCrunch discusses Microsoft’s warning to customers that after January of 2020, the Microsoft 7 system will no longer receive free security updates and patches. Whittaker details that Microsoft wants users to switch to its more secure Windows 10 system, but that 40% of desktop devices remain attached to Windows 7. Whittaker elaborates that Microsoft had previously incentivized users to convert to Microsoft 10.

Our Take

Software systems are typically developed following data security and privacy trends.  Although it may seem like a hassle to switch your software system to a more recent version, doing so will greatly increase the security of your online habits. Microsoft seems to have spoiled Windows 7 users in a sense because they have received updates and patches for the system for over a decade. However, despite incentivizing a switch to the most recent operating system, many devices are still running the old program. If users with Windows 7 devices fail to switch to a more recent version, their devices will be at an increased risk of viruses and other damaging vulnerabilities after January 2020. If you have a device running Windows 7, make sure that you update the device before January 2020 to avoid the repercussions of running an old and insecure program.
