SAPPhire

SAPPhire

The Safety Assessment of Perioperative Pain Medications for Children (SAPPhire) project is the first to look at the different ways that physicians manage pain and prescribe opioids for children who have surgery, as well as, find out about complications, pain, and limits to activities after surgery. SAPPhire will fill critical knowledge gaps by providing essential information needed to develop pediatric procedure- and patient-specific guidelines for pain medication use that balances the least amount of opioids while ensuring that that children’s pain is well controlled.

Salva Balbale, PhD, awarded a 3-year award from the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.

The award is motivated by two overarching goals: (1) to support Dr. Balbale’s scientific and professional development toward becoming an independently funded investigator focused on making inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) care delivery safer, better coordinated, and more patient-centered; and (2) to develop and implement a human-centered Chronic Opioid Use Assessment and Screening Tool (COAST) to assist AYA with IBD and their clinicians to monitor and assess risk for progression to chronic opioid use.

With the Adaptations to Support Implementation Readiness of Enhanced Neonatal Surgical Recovery (ENSuRe) study, we seek to develop and refine the necessary contextual adaptations of the ERAS® Guideline for Perioperative Care in Neonatal Intestinal Surgery strategies, tools, and resources, gain key stakeholder buy-in, and assess implementation readiness and thresholds for a future prospective effectiveness-implementation multi-center trial in diverse pediatric surgery settings.
