This handmade chart on chipboard likely hung in the halls of the Law School during World War I as a means for students to keep track of their professors and classmates who were serving in the war. Several such boards were made in the first half of the 20th century to mark those who had made the honor roll, and it seems fitting that those serving in the war would merit the honor of their own board.
As these posters only cover those who enlisted and were commissioned in 1917, they do not provide a complete record of those who served in World War I; however, they do provide insight into the dates and locations of some of Northwestern University School of Law’s student soldiers. In total, 365 faculty, staff, and alumni were represented in the service from 1917 to 1919, and the vast majority of the students who left returned to finish their degrees.
