I firmly believe that mentorship is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences of being a scientist. My mentoring philosophy is that a “one size fits all” model is not ideal for mentoring. One must adapt their mentorship based on constant communication and feedback from mentees. Thus, a productive mentor-mentee relationship begins with good and open communication. As a mentor, I will strive to create a safe environment, where mentees of all backgrounds are welcome and can openly communicate their goals and expectations. I will, in turn, provide a listening ear and honest feedback to questions and concerns.
My goals for research mentorship include:
- Creating a safe and inclusive environment where trainees from all backgrounds can thrive. I will lead a lab that values people for their differences and celebrates diversity — a diverse body with differing viewpoints and problem-solving abilities is essential for science to progress.
- Devising a personalized mentorship plan based on trainees’ needs. I will encourage mentees to discuss their goals and aspirations with me and to create an individualized career development plan towards achieving these goals. This document will provide the necessary framework for a fruitful mentor-mentee relationship. We will revisit the plan frequently to assess progress and update as needed.
- Finally, guiding mentees so that they develop the necessary skills to establish themselves as future independent researchers. There is nothing more heartening than seeing one’s mentees succeed. I will be your biggest advocate. I will strive to provide you with all the tangible and intangible resources necessary for you to thrive in the lab and beyond.
