Sommer and Tighe, in partnership with Mesmin Destin and Onnie Rogers, received funding from the ECMC Foundation, Annie E. Casey Foundation, and Michelson 20MM Foundation to design and study strategies to promote belonging and connection among student parents and their families on college campuses.

Sommer, Tighe, and Sabol received funding from the Administration for Children and Families to explore the role of childcare on the success of student parents in the HPOG 2.0 program.

Tighe, with co-authors Sommer, T. E., Sabol, T. J., Chase-Lansdale, P. L., Yoshikawa, H., Brooks-Gunn, J., & King, C. T publish article A Family-Centered Approach to Learning English as a Second Language: A Mixed-Methods Experimental Evaluation in Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis.

NU2Gen launches new Global Research Agenda.

Sommer, with co-authors Franchett, E., Yoshikawa, H., and Lombardi, J., soon to publish article A global call for two-generation approaches to child development and caregivers’ livelihoods in Child Development Perspectives.

NU2Gen receives Northwestern Buffett Institute Global Collaboration Grant for The Global Partnership for Two-Generation Approaches to Disabilities, Ireland, a three-way collaboration among the Crann Centre, Cork, Ireland, University of College Cork, and Northwestern University, May 2024 – May 2025.

  • Sommer & Tighe begin new partnership with Crann Centre, Cork, Ireland, to study the local NGO’s two-generation approach to neuro-physical disabilities across Ireland, March 2024 – ongoing.
  • Sommer gives lecture to University of College Cork faculty, A Global Two-Generation Approach: Theory, Evidence, & System’s Change, March 21, 2024.

Team

Lauren Tighe was voted the “Most Outstanding Instructor” in part for a new class she developed called Child and Family Policy. “It was one of the most thoughtful, comprehensive, and well-planned out courses I have taken during my time here,” a nominator wrote.

Catherine Zhong was selected as a candidate for the Minority Fellowship Program Award by Foundation for the Advancement of Human Systems and the SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program. The fellowship objective is to increase the number of culturally competent Marriage and Family Therapists.

Angelo Karadimas joins NU2Gen as research assistant. He is an undergraduate student at Northwestern who is currently majoring in Political Science and minoring in History and Spanish. During the academic year, Angelo is involved in activities such as Model UN (serving as Director of Wellness) and Rotaract (serving as President). He is interested in education policy, government, and business.
