Calculate Estimated Course Load

How much work is appropriate for students to succeed in your course? It is important to be cognizant of the workload you require of students. You want students to achieve course learning objectives in a productive, effective way–without being underwhelmed or approaching burnout.

Researchers from Wake Forest University and Rice University partnered to develop the Enhanced Course Workload Estimator. This algorithm-driven tool calculates various aspects of course and student activity to determine independent work hours and class contact time in a given week. Key measures include:

  • Frequency and duration of live class meetings
  • Quantity of pages and depth of understanding expected from readings
  • Quantity of writing and scope of perspective reflected in writing
  • Level of asynchronous activities, like discussion posts and experiences with multimedia
