Action Mapping

The Action Mapping model works for specific projects or activities—when specific roles, information, and action lead to a central goal.

Training designer Cathy Moore developed the Action Mapping model in 2008 (“Action Mapping,” 2018). It comprises three steps aimed at achieving specific goals in specific contexts. This model links concepts to practices in a course setting.

  • Essential information
  • Realistic practice activity
  • Specific behavior required to reach goal

While ADDIE and SAM may work in full-course design, MSHE instructors could use Action Mapping for class activities and group projects. The following diagram illustrates information and activity team members demonstrate that accomplish one common goal. The culmination of what each person knows and does maximizes the common goal.
