Brendan Kerwin

Brendan Kerwin, Co-director

Brendan grew up in Alexandria, VA and received his bachelors in chemistry from Georgetown University. He is a 3rd year PhD candidate in the Northwestern Chemistry Department. His research studies the effect of surface chemistry on the electronic and optical properties of nanomaterials. Outside of lab, he enjoys running, cooking, and hiking.

Janan Hui

Janan Hui, Co-director

Janan grew up in Hong Kong and is a third-year graduate student in chemistry. His research involves sustainable manufacturing of printable conductive inks using bio-derived materials. Outside of lab, Janan enjoys cooking (especially the eating part), playing basketball, watching films, and is an avid video game nerd. He is also really passionate about songwriting and music production, hoping to one day release his own music.

Jim Seale

Jim Seale, Niles West Program Co-coordinator

I’m Jim and I’m a fourth year graduate student in the Stoddart Group here at Northwestern. I grew up in Scotland, a faraway land full of rain, sheep and brutal, self-deprecating humour. I did my undergraduate and master’s degrees in chemistry at the University of Edinburgh before moving over to the United States. My interests include rain, sheep and brutal self-deprecating humour.

Caitlin Coplan

Caitlin Coplan, Niles West Program Co-coordinator

I’m Caitlin, a third-year student in the Chemistry Ph.D. program in the Schaller Group. My research focus is on studying the optical properties of novel metallic nanomaterials using ultrafast spectroscopy for future applications in energy, catalysis, and chemical sensing. Originally from sunny Phoenix, AZ, I pursued my undergrad in Physical Chemistry and Chemical Education at the University of Utah. When not in the lab, I love running, making art, watching Star Trek, and being a cat and plant mom

Grace Xiong

Grace Xiong, REACH Co-coordinator

Grace is a 4th year PhD candidate in the Haile lab. Her research studies solid acid materials as electrolyte candidates in solid acid fuel cells. She grew up in North Carolina and did her undergraduate degree at Caltech in chemical engineering. In her free time, she enjoys reading and painting.

Gayathri Subramanian

Gayathri Subramanian, ETHS Co-cordinator

Gayathri Subramanian is from Chennai, India. Her city is in the southern part of India so
scorching heat and sun was part of her day to day living. She graduated from SRM Institute of
Science and Technology, with an engineering degree in Biotechnology. Having had research
experience in Neuroscience, she is currently doing her second year of PhD in Psychology at
Northwestern University. She works in the Cognitive neuroscience lab with Dr Ken Paller, her
primary area of research revolves around the process of memory consolidation, reactivation and
the role of sleep in the same. Her hobbies include indian classical dancing, drawing/painting,
learning the ukelele (pandemic activity), reading books and watching movies/Tv shows.

Conor Porter

Conor Porter, ETHS Co-cordinator

Conor received his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana. He is a fourth year Mechanical Engineering PhD Student in the Advanced Manufacturing Processes Laboratory. His research focused on metal Additive Manufacturing. Outside the lab, he likes board games, camping, and making things.

Chelsea Greene

Chelsea Greene, Niles West Coordinator

Chelsie earned her BS in Chemistry, accompanied by a minor in Mathematics, from Washington State University. Currently in her 4th year, Chelsie is a doctoral candidate within Northwestern’s Department of Chemistry. Her research focuses on spin quantum bits for applications in quantum information science. Beyond academic pursuits, Chelsie enjoys volunteering, cooking vegetarian food, and spending time outdoors.

Abhiram Devata

Abhiram Devata, Niles West Coordinator
